Early Life and Education

Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a Tamil Indian biologist whose work on breast cancer led to the development of new treatments. Her father, Donald Harris, was a Jamaican economist.

Kamala Harris at Howard University

Harris attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she studied political science and economics. While at Howard, she became involved in student activism and served as president of the Black Law Students Association.

Political Career

After graduating from law school, Harris worked as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. In 2004, she was elected District Attorney of San Francisco, becoming the first woman and the first person of color to hold that position.

In 2011, Harris was elected Attorney General of California, again making history as the first woman and the first person of color to hold that office. As Attorney General, Harris focused on combating human trafficking, protecting consumers, and reforming the criminal justice system.

Vice President of the United States

In 2020, Harris was elected Vice President of the United States, becoming the first woman and the first person of color to hold that office. As Vice President, Harris has played a key role in the Biden administration's efforts to address the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic crisis, and climate change.
