Among the first waiver cuts in 2023

The Connecticut Sun announced that the team has waived both of its 2023 draft picks, including national champion Alexis Morris, after the first preseason game. Its a big deal for a team to waive a No. 1 overall pick, but thats just what the Wings did when they cut Collier, the top pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft.

Morris, a 5-foot-7 point guard, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft. She led Notre Dame to the national championship in 2023 and was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player. Collier, a 6-foot-1 forward, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft. She was the National Player of the Year in 2022 and led UConn to the national championship.

Both players were expected to make an immediate impact for the Sun, but they were both waived after just one preseason game. The Sun lost to the WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces Tuesday night.

The Sun did not give a reason for waiving Morris and Collier. The team could not be reached for comment.
