A Century of Cinema: Columbia Pictures Celebrates 100 Years

From Poverty Row to Hollywood Heights

On a recent July afternoon, the ever-mercurial Tom Rothman arrives in good spirits for a tour of Columbia Pictures, the studio where he has reigned as chairman since 2013. The occasion? The studio's 100th anniversary, a milestone that few in Hollywood thought it would ever reach.

A Colorful History

Columbia Pictures has had a colorful history, from its humble beginnings on Poverty Row to its ownership by Coca-Cola and the infamous Sony hack. But through it all, the studio has remained a major player in Hollywood, producing some of the most iconic films of all time.

Columbia was founded in 1919 by brothers Jack and Harry Cohn. The studio quickly became known for its low-budget Westerns and melodramas. But in the 1930s, Columbia began to produce more ambitious films, such as Frank Capra's It Happened One Night (1934) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939).

In 1989, Sony acquired Columbia Pictures. The studio continued to produce successful films, such as Men in Black (1997) and Spider-Man (2002). However, the studio also faced challenges, such as the 2014 Sony hack.

Despite the challenges, Columbia Pictures remains a major force in Hollywood. The studio has a strong slate of films in development, including Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2020) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021).
