What is a Fever?

A fever is a body temperature that is higher than normal. Normal body temperature is around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius). A fever is considered to be anything above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).

Fevers are usually caused by an infection or illness. When your body is fighting an infection, it produces chemicals called pyrogens. These pyrogens cause your body temperature to rise.

Symptoms of a Fever

The most common symptoms of a fever are:

  • Sweating
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion

When to See a Doctor

Most fevers are not serious and will go away on their own within a few days. However, you should see a doctor if you have a fever that:

  • Is higher than 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius)
  • Lasts for more than 3 days
  • Is accompanied by other symptoms, such as a rash, confusion, or difficulty breathing

Treatment for a Fever

The best way to treat a fever is to let it run its course. However, there are some things you can do to help relieve your symptoms, such as:

  • Rest
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • Apply a cool compress to your forehead

Prevention of a Fever

There is no surefire way to prevent a fever, but there are some things you can do to reduce your risk of getting sick, such as:

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Avoid contact with sick people
  • Get vaccinated against common illnesses
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Get regular exercise
