Israel's Shutdown of Al Jazeera Highlights Long-Running Tensions
Background
Al Jazeera, the prominent international news organization, has been operating in Israel since 1996. However, tensions between the two entities have escalated in recent years.
Shutdown and Seizure
On August 9, 2023, Israel's Communications Minister, Yoaz Hendel, ordered the shutdown of Al Jazeera's operations in the country. The ministry also seized some of the organization's communication equipment.
Extension and Statement
On October 6, 2023, Israel's telecom authorities extended the ban on Al Jazeera's operations for an additional 45 days. According to Hendel, the decision was based on the claim that the network "incites violence" and "supports terrorism."
Al Jazeera's Response
Al Jazeera has vehemently rejected the allegations, stating that its coverage is "fair and balanced." The organization has also condemned the Israeli government's actions as an "attack on press freedom."
